Widening Horizons volunteer projects are part of the government’s drug intervention initiative and form part of the aftercare element. The projects are coordinated by Addiction Dependency Solutions in Stockport, Tameside, Oldham, Rochdale and Bolton.
The Widening Horizons project aims to recruit volunteer workers/befrienders and mentors to support individuals, many of whom are currently involved in the criminal justice system, during their reintegration into the community and through treatment interventions.
It will provide volunteers / mentors with the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of activities, supporting individuals with a substance misuse problem, and those who have recently been released from prison.
The project seeks to develop a strong network of support and provides a 24 hour, 7days per week telephone helpline, to provide information, support and advice to clients. This helpline is staffed during out of office hours by well trained and dedicated volunteers, supported by the Volunteer Trainer/Coordinator.
All volunteers will receive a comprehensive and progressive training programme, which is in line with the Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS) guidelines, along with constant support and guidance from the project’s Volunteer/Trainer Coordinator and the staff at Addiction Dependency Solutions.
